Donald Trump’s presidency could usher in significant changes that may impact our academic and professional futures. Based on his track record and campaign rhetoric, we anticipate that his administration could attempt to weaken the legal rights of academic workers to form unions, reduce federal funding for scientific research, restrict free expression, and roll back diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Additionally, under Trump’s administration immigration policies could shift dramatically, making the lives of international students and scholars less predictable and secure.
As part of a movement of researchers fighting to make academia more inclusive and equitable, we must be ready to fight back against these changes, alongside tens of thousands of organized academic workers across the country. To do that, it’s critical that we meet to discuss the experience of academic workers during the last Trump administration so we can better prepare for this one.
It’s crucial for us to stay informed and prepared for the road ahead. The more of us who join us at the Town Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 21, in Ann 10-68, the more effectively we can discuss ways to address the impacts of the upcoming administration on academic workers and explore ways to adapt and advocate for our community.
