Last week, we notified Sinai’s administration that a supermajority of student workers at Sinai have signed authorization cards in support of forming our union and asked them to meet with us to discuss a fair, efficient process to verify our majority support so we can move forward. Instead of agreeing to meet, Deans Nester and Filizola responded expressing that they would prefer to resolve this through the procedures of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). You may have noticed that this week, graduate student organizations such as oSTEM, CSSA, 1G, SEOS, and the Student Council PhD Representatives sent letters urging Mount Sinai to remain neutral and allow student workers to inform ourselves and make our own decision on whether to unionize. The neutrality of Sinai’s administration is crucial to respect the rights and autonomy of graduate student workers and ensure that no student workers are excluded from their right to participate.
