Today, student workers joined the picket line to support postdocs fighting for a strong first contract to improve equity at Sinai.
TL;DR:
- Today marked the kick off of the postdoc’s strike, which made history as the first postdoc strike at a private institution.
- Continue to support the postdocs’ fight for a fair contract:
- Join the picket (9am – 5pm)
- Attend the opening rally tomorrow (10am in front of Icahn) featuring speeches from elected officials
- Sign the community pledge to respect the picket line and show solidarity with the postdoc strike
The postdocs have made significant progress on their contract, but Sinai is still holding out on issues of basic equity: housing, parental leave, and childcare. The strike will continue until the postdocs democratically ratify a new contract. In the meantime, it’s important we support them and avoid activities that weaken our post docs’ strike. A rising tide lifts all boats!
Here are some strong ways to show your support for the postdocs:
- Avoid replacing labor. This is especially important if your PI asks you to do work typically done by a postdoc. Strikes are meant to be disruptive. The power of a strike is that the postdoc’s absence is felt.
- Pick up a sign and join the picket line! You can show up for the postdocs (literally) by joining them on the picket line. Any amount of time is helpful, whether it’s your whole day or just your lunch break!
- Refuse to cross the picket line (refuse to work).Tell your PI you will not be working because of your decision not to cross the picket line. Workers who make this choice are legally protected. Attend classes even during the strike period.
- Talk to your coworkers about the importance of respecting the picket line. Engage in conversations with other workers about the strike and how to support the postdocs. More voices means more power!
