In June, we filed to form our union with over 80% support from student workers at Sinai. Despite this supermajority support from student workers, Sinai admin has not only refused to voluntarily recognize our union, but also has taken the position that the research we conduct does not count as work for the institution.
As student workers, we know that we work and provide critical services to Sinai including performing key experiments toward PI grants and contributing to publications, while also supporting interviews and orientation, training other researchers, and building a more supportive community through student groups. As the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) moves forward, we will continue to organize and urge Sinai to stop obstructing our right to form a union.
To this end, we delivered an open letter to our MTA directors, signed by a majority of student workers, urging them to advocate for our right to unionize to Sinai administration and not interfere in our decision to form a union. Click here to read our open letter and use this link to add your name.
We will have an informational Union Town Hall Monday August 28 @ 6pm, Annenberg 5-205 to celebrate our support, welcome new first year student workers, discuss next steps, and answer any questions you may have. RSVP here so that we know how many people to expect!
