We are excited to announce that more than 80% of student workers have now signed authorization cards in support of Sinai Student Workers-UAW as our Union. On Monday, we rallied with our unionized postdoc colleagues. We celebrated and urged the administration to agree to a fair and neutral process to verify our supermajority support before we file our petition to form our union with the National Labor Relations Board. Together, we showed that student workers and postdocs are united in fighting for better working conditions and greater equity and inclusivity at Sinai.

We also delivered our open letter signed by student workers from across Sinai to Deans Nestler and Filizola, urging Sinai to remain neutral during our unionization process. We were able to meet with both Deans, and were glad to hear Dean Nestler express his desire for students to have a positive experience at Sinai. Dean Filizola thanked us for informing her of our intention to unionize. Given that the Deans sent emails in the lead-up to the postdocs’ union election that seemed aimed at discouraging unionization, we hope that they respect our request to remain neutral and refrain from influencing student workers’ majority decision on forming our union.

We are building a stronger collective voice for student workers at Sinai. Together, we have power as workers to improve our working conditions.

As we move forward with seeking recognition of our union from Mount Sinai, we will hold a Union Town Hall Wednesday June 7 at 5PM (location TBA). RSVP here. Join us to meet other student workers, hear from unionized researchers at other institutions, and get answers to any questions you may have.

We are always looking for more student workers to get involved and/or share feedback. Fill out this form to get more involved in our campaign and an organizer will be in touch!
